The English department aims to instil a love of language and literature in every pupil. The curriculum is progressive enabling learners to acquire and develop skills as they progress through the school. They are taught to read and write accurately and purposefully. Pupils are encouraged to unlock their imagination through varied reading and creative writing. Confidence is instilled in pupils through speaking and listening tasks which both encourage individual excellence and group participation. Relationships between staff and students are based on mutual respect. The learning atmosphere in the classroom offers help and support. It encourages pupils to challenge themselves to achieve the best possible academic success.

What Extra Curricular Activities Are There?
The English department organises a full programme of extra-curricular activities. Every week, there is a Creative Writing Club for KS3 and extra revision sessions for KS4. Pupils are also encouraged to showcase their writing talents in the school newspaper, ‘The Aviator.’ We have welcomed many authors to the school to talk to students about their writing and to run workshop sessions. We also organise educational visits to theatrical productions and to the ‘Hay Festival.’ Each year we run numerous competitions for both reading and writing. Many of our winners have had their work published or displayed at prestigious events.
